Lenall Siebenaler - Friends’ Library Store Supervisor

An Interview with Lenall, the Friends of the Library Store Supervisor

How did you get your start in retail?

Out of college I went to work with an advertising agency. Despite being an exciting job I could barely afford to work there and my parents suggested that I go to work for Boeing where my family all worked. This seemed like a safe solution for me. So I interviewed and accepted a buying position there just prior to a government hiring freeze taking effect. Long story short, my paperwork was missing a signature and I did not have a job. I went to Frederick and Nelson Department Store and asked to work on the floor. The management quickly noticed that I did more than just sell and asked me to go into the management program. And the rest is history.

What was your favorite job?

My favorite job was working for Liberty House in Hawaii. I had a fantastic boss who really believed in me and respected my abilities. I was very successful there and I loved the categories that I was buying. My department was accessories, watches and sunglasses. I love accessories. It was a perfect category for me.

How long have you been a working artist and what types of media do you use?

I have always been encouraged to be artistic. My parents were artistic. As a young adult I was mostly a needlework and craft person.I started painting in 1991 and probably started to label myself as an artist in 1999. Once I started painting I worked exclusively in watercolor. Today, I am all over the board. Whatever materials are around me end up on the piece -- mixed media is the correct terminology: watercolor, acrylic, water soluble crayon, ink, pencil, encaustic, fiber, collage. This spring I started working with felting and it has become a new passion.

What inspires your creativity?

Everything! My mind is constantly percolating ideas. I am always seeing something and making it my own in my mind. My art has a definite style interlacing through it. COLOR has always excited me. Red is my favorite! Texture is key. I love going out on an artist date and coming back with my well refilled with new ideas.

Now that you've had a chance to see the variety of used books in the store, which ones have caught your eye or intrigued you?

I have purchased a few books so far. I read fiction predominantly. I like to read classic literature, mystery detective series, and historical romances. In addition, I love reading a new book that takes me to a time or place that I have not experienced. I love to learn something new while reading. I use books as an escape too! I always am looking for a new author to add to my old familiar friends that I know and love.
