Annual Meeting of the Friends

Annual Meeting

About one hundred eager readers and walkers attended the Annual Meeting of the Friends on June 1st at Central Library. Not only were they treated to delicious fare catered by New Seasons, they also sampled two red wines (2008 Cow Catcher Red and 2007 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon) donated by Dumas Station Wines and poured by new FOL Board member, Ali Harvey.

Craig Cedros, our President for another year, opened the meeting by introducing Director of Libraries, Vailey Oehlke. She thanked the Friends for their work in aiding Multnomah County Library’s services to the community. Thanks also were offered to key people on the Board and staff, whose work is always appreciated. Board Member and Nominating Committee Chair, Marc Alifanz (also our new Secretary) introduced the five new Board members who were approved by acclamation: Nathan Brunette, Tama Filipas, Jane Gigler, Ali Harvey, and Kirsten Leonard.

Recent Ventures

Craig outlined our recent ventures: the new logo and its many iterations on magnets, buttons, car decals, adult t-shirts, children's t-shirts and tote bags; the new membership brochure; the new website; and our Pop Up Store on NW 23rd and Johnson. Thanks to all who made these fine things happen!

Two happy winners left with book-filled totes. Another tote and logo t-shirt went to Laura O. Foster, our speaker, and the final winner got a copy of her most recent book, The Portland Stairs Book.

In addition to terrific photos from all over Portland, Laura Foster treated us to stories about the folks responsible for designing and building landmarks and staircases, the purposes they served, and how some have since been refurbished to their former glory by neighborhood residents. Our pioneering tendencies didn’t end with the Oregon Trail, but continued in many ways into the 21st century, as revealed in these unique buildings and staircases throughout the city. Get your copy of The Portland Stairs Book or one of Laura O. Foster’s other walking guides to Portland and discover the hidden treasures that our great city offers.
