Youngsters check out books in the Pop Up store.

New Way to Fundraise

Our unique Pop Up store produced profits of over $10,000 and over 50 new Friends members through early June. Staffed by 40 new volunteers, the store opened Saturday May 14, 2011. Visitors will find gently used books and work by local artists including cards, photographs, paintings, glass art, assemblages, mosaics and jewelry. The shop will be open through August 28.

Located in the former Music Millennium store on NW 23rd Avenue, the store is popular with both Portlanders and tourists, including visitors from the US, Europe and Asia. The Portland Business Alliance led the effort to find a suitable location and Singer Properties generously donated the space at no cost. A visit to the Multnomah County Library yielded the stately oak tables, chairs and display fixtures. When we asked if Powell’s Books had any shelves they could lend, Michael Powell joked “First you ask a favor, now you’re competing with me!” but graciously loaned the bookshelves that house over 3,500 books.

We are grateful to our many volunteers, Singer Properties, Powell’s Books, the Portland Business Alliance, Multnomah County Library, the FOL Book Room staff and volunteers and the generous library patrons who donate their books to the Friends.
